January 2012 Newsletter

Four years ago I made a New Year's resolution that was different than any I'd made in the past. I had just become a new mommy and I was working diligently to provide for my new baby boy through self-employment. It was more of a struggle than I'd ever experienced, but worth every moment of freedom that I had earned to stay home and raise my son. As I began to appreciate the value of what my own products represented,  I resolved to change my purchasing habits by using my own hard earned dollars and my consumer power to give back to the community of self-employed parents.

It wasn't long before I discovered that there were others like me who had made enormous sacrifices for the chance at having the freedom to stay at home with their children. For some, it meant giving up a corporate salary, a budding career or a posh lifestyle. It was clear to me that by getting unified we would have the power to make a difference for ourselves, our businesses, and our families. OurMilkMoney.com was launched a few months later.

As we head into our 5th year together, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for what we have created together and where we are clearly headed. It has been an absolute pleasure to watch your businesses flourish, see your children grow, and welcome new members each year as we expand and commit to our mission.

Thank you for believing in us and remaining a part of our family.

Happy 2012!

At Our Milk Money, we don't discriminate. Moms have great stories to share, but so do the Dads. It is definitely a sign of the times when Dads from all over the world begin to step up as primary care-takers and embrace their roles as stay-at-home parents.

We held out as long as we could. And it wasn’t very long. I read a statistic one time that said something like 95% of boys play video games. 95%! How do you compete with that? My wife and I have two boys so our chances of keeping video games out of the house were pretty much shot the second the X chromosome laid eyes on the Y chromosome across the crowded DNA strand. We were never into video games before the kids came along. My wife didn’t like them because…well she’s a girl. Sorry to generalize and sound sexist, but that 95% of boy gamers drops to about 25% for girls. And while I played a video game or two as a kid, I never really obsessed over them…probably because I have the hand/eye coordination of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. With the popularity of video games today we knew it was inevitable, but we wanted to keep them out of the house for a long as possible. Maybe until they’re, say, 10? Stop laughing. We may have been naïve butContinue reading →

This is Not the Path I Started Out On

Do you remember what we were like before we became parents? Barely, but I do. When my husband and I decided to create a family, somehow we thought our child would just easily fit into our busy lives like a new puppy. We had no idea the culture shock…the physical, mental and emotional transformation that would come about once our children became the centerpiece in our lives. No matter how much we had prepared, how many books we read, how much research we did – everything took a detour once baby made 3...Continue reading →
